What is remote patient monitoring?

Remote patient monitoring uses digital medical devices to collect needed health information to guide treatment decisions and ensure that you stay healthy. Some digital devices like insulin pumps also deliver treatment.

The digital device sends the information to your smartphone. You can forward the data to Kit manually or some devices automatically transmit it so that she can monitor your health and blood sugar levels and promptly recommend changes when needed.

Thanks to remote patient monitoring, you can schedule telehealth appointments and obtain current blood sugar levels using the device you have at home.

What information does remote monitoring collect?

While Kit specializes in diabetes and focuses on monitoring your blood sugar, she also manages and monitors other chronic diseases associated with diabetes, like high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart disease.

Remote monitoring devices can gather information about your:

  • Blood sugar
  • Heart rate
  • Respiration rate
  • Body temperature
  • Blood oxygen
  • Heart’s electrical activity (electrocardiogram or ECG)
  • Weight

The devices used to monitor blood sugar include blood glucose meters, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices, and insulin pumps.

Blood glucose meters rely on an old-fashioned finger prick and a meter that measures the sugar in your tiny blood sample. CGM devices constantly measure your blood sugar using a sensor, and insulin pumps automatically inject insulin.

How does remote patient monitoring work?

Kit has extensive experience teaching patients how to use insulin pumps and CGM devices. After showing you how to use your device, she provides ongoing support if you run into problems.

In addition to your current blood sugar levels, some CGM devices show whether your blood sugar is moving up or down, information that guides treatment changes to improve control of your diabetes.

Some people have an insulin pump that communicates with their CGM device. The pump uses data from the CGM to automatically adjust your insulin delivery.

CGM systems also let you use an online platform to upload the information and print a report. You can review the report with Kit, who can often see patterns in a printed report that wouldn’t be noticed if you were checking your blood sugar with finger pricks.
